Brick, Boundaries and Life
This old wall in a public park is juxtaposed with a lot of modern buildings and public amenities. One is struck by the way the rural people continue doing what they have done for years, regardless of what happens around them. Notwithstanding the fact that land is increasing in value here – up to 6 fold increase in as many years – the arable land and the handsome prices that locally-produced food fetches domestically, keep residents of Hwaseong-si involved in agrarian activities alongside advanced light and heavy manufacturing plants. This area is well-known for a few things (notorious for at least one). Among the good things are radish (a basic part of the Korean favourite daily food, kimchi), grapes, ginseng, peppers, seafood, as well as for the KIA manufacturing plant located 8 km from this park. There are several areas and residential apartment blocks set up exclusively by the KIA motor company for their employees .
